New
book published by young Nadur author [20/01/04]
June29th.com’s
editor, Pierre J. Mejlak, has just published his fourth book, Stejjer
mill-Bibbja. The book, with almost 500 full-colour pages, is
available in hard-cover from all leading bookshops in Malta and Gozo.
Stejjer mill-Bibbja was published by Merlin Library and
printed in Singapore. The
original English version, Pat Alexander’s The Lion First Bible,
is considered as the UK’s top choice Bible for young children. Young
children should enjoy reading the specially selected and retold Old
and New Testament stories in this chunky first Bible. The
short yet lively retellings introduce the reader to 60 key stories
from the Bible, explaining concepts in terms that a child should
understand. Trevor Zahra, Malta’s leading children’s author,
wrote the Preface to the book.

Nadurin
in Australia planning to open Community Centre
[17/01/04]
The
Australian Nadur Association has recently filed an application to
take a lease on a grand building to open a Nadur Community Centre.
Association coordinator Peter Paul Portelli told june29th.com that
if they manage to get the lease, the association would transform the
centre into a Church for the feast of St Peter and St Paul. “We
are already planning a number of regular activities which will be
held in this centre. These include folkloric singing, theatre and family
dances. Should the lease be successful, then we would celebrate in
style the coming Easter, Mnarja and Christmas,” Peter Paul
Portelli added. Meanwhile, the association is holding a bus trip to
Philip Island on Sunday, February 1st. Those interested should call
Tony Sultana on 9308 7659 or Peter Paul Portelli on 9449 0492. The
association is also having it's annual picnic at Brimbank Park on
Sunday, February 29th.

2004
is International Year of Rice [15/01/04]
The
United Nation's Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) is this
year marking the International Year of Rice. Almost
3,000 million people share the culture, traditions, and untapped
potentials of rice. Wherever rice is grown - in the deltas and
valleys of Asia’s major rivers, on the slopes of the Himalayas, in
Africa’s tropical rainforests or on dry lands in the Middle East -
rice enters people's lives as a daily food, at religious festivals
and wedding parties, in paintings and in songs. Rice
is a food - but more than a food. It is society, culture, politics,
business, the beauty of the landscape, people in their communities.
In short, rice is life. Click here

Carnival
fever hitting Nadur [11/01/04]
Less
than forty days to go for the craziest, funniest and most
spontaneous event in the Maltese Islands! The Nadur Spontaneous
Carnival this year kicks off on Friday, February 20th and wraps up
the following Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Nadur
Local Council
will be organising a Carnival Ball on Thursday, February 19th at the
Mnarja Band Club, a children's carnival show on Friday and the
Carnival Sunday show at the main square. Popular TV-presenters Joe
and Veronica (Id-Dulli) and Joe Demicoli will host the four-hour
show. This year's Carnival competitors will be divided into
three groups: one for Ramla and Ta' Hida area, another for the San
Blas area and the rest in another group. There will no longer be a
competition for big Carnival floats. This is part of the Local
Council's strategy to encourage more Nadurin to take an active part
in the spontaneous celebrations. Meanwhile, all
those who would like to take part in this year's Carnival Sunday competitions should hand in their application by not later than
