Country Walks in Nadur

With its beautiful countryside Nadur offers some of the best country walk-routes on the island. For the benefit of all those who wish to leave their homes and have a beautiful healthy walk in Nadur here are two routes which should take you to places that many can only enjoy on post-cards!

Route A:

Nadur Square > San Blas > Mistra Rocks > Wied ir-Rihan > Nadur Square

Start your walk from Nadur's square. Take the road to San Blas. If you don't know it, either follow the road-signs, take a look at the map or ask about it. As you go down, take the road on the left and go down a very steep concrete track. After a few hundred yards you arrive at a delightful little secluded beach with red sand.

Turn sharp right and follow a little path running under the trees and continue until further walking is not possible. From here, though, you can have a good view of Mistra Rocks, rocks of all shapes and sizes.

Now retrace your steps and go up until you reach the fork at the top. Make a left turn here to Wied Rihan (myrtle valley). Walk until the road dips for a short distance. Then go in the gap which is on the left hand side at the end of the field and then to the right, making for the high point. In springtime this land is covered with wild colourful flowers.

Directly in front of you lies a tower, perched on the high rocky cliffs' edge. This tower is commonly known as Aesop's Tower. It was built in 1667. In the history books it is better known as It-Torri ta' Rdum il-Kbir (the tower of the great cliff). There are four coat of arms on the wall, but unfortunately, the weather has taken its toll.

By walking along the cliff's edge on the right, you can see excellent views of Wied Rihan and also a splendid view of Mistra Rocks and the small bay of Dahlet Qorrot.

Now follow around the cliff's edge and you come to a small farmhouse, situated at the top end of the road to this valley. Walk to the farmhouse, regain the road and walk to Nadur village.

Useful Information:

Distance: 8km

Grading: Not so easy, at least half way

Sightseeing: View of Mistra Rocks, San Blas Bay, Wied ir-Rihan

Places of Historical Interest: The Tower of the Great Cliffs

Route B:

Nadur Square > Dahlet Qorrot > Qala > Nadur

Start your walk from the main square in front of the church and take the San Blas road. After some distance turn right and just follow this road to Dahlet Qorrot. As you walk along, you see one of the most picturesque and fertile valleys on the island.

This road is easy walking but it dips steeply suddenly. Walk down for a couple of minutes and keep to the left hand side. If you look carefully, you should see a narrow path going under the trees on your left hand side. Follow this path down and you will be surprised by an incredible view: the emerald blue sea of San Blas down on your right and Mistra Rocks, a jumbled mass of rocks of all shapes and colours on your left.

Now retrace your steps and go down the steep road to Dahlet Qorrot bay. Down there are some fishermen's houses hewn in the rock across a small sandy beach. In the summer time, this place is filled with fishing boats and is quite popular as a swimming place.

From this point go up the same steep road and continue walking for about half a mile. Make a left turn across the green valley and go up the hill on the other side. This dirt road is very steep and in the winter it might be slippery when nearing the top. So take care if you go walking during the winter months. Once you are up there the scenery in the valley below up to Dahlet Qorrot and beyond is really exceptional. I am sure you will be tempted to take many photos!

Go along the circular road till you reach the Qala Windmill. From the mill proceed to Independence Square, just 50 metres away, where you'll find a statue of St Joseph in the middle of a roundabout. Follow the road signs and you'll soon be back in Nadur Square!

Useful Information:

Grading: Easy walking all the way
