Gozo Football League Division 1

Victoria Hotspurs 0 - Nadur Youngsters 2
15-11-2003 at Sannat Ground

report by Charlie Grech

Nadur Youngsters registered their first win this season when they beat Victoria Hotspurs by 2 goals to 0.  It was a really scrappy game with very little action to be recorded. Both teams were coming from a defeat in their first game, and the 3 points were very important. The Youngsters were without the suspended M. Buttigieg. The Youngsters continued to give their youths the much-needed confidence in the first division. Both teams started the game cautiously and there was never a real danger to both goalkeepers.  K. Abela, for Hotspurs, should have done better on two occasions, first he headed just wide and later he shot wide when he came face to face with Vella in the Youngsters goal. The first half ended 0-0.

The second period was a bit more excited as Nadur made two substitutions and their play was more adventurous. J. Portelli’s lob ended just wide and the same fate happened to Egere’s header from a corner.  A personal action by A. Portelli ended with a shot going just over the bar. In the 80th minute the Youngsters opened the score.  A perfect cross by Marlow to Joseph Portelli Cauchi who put the ball in the net from a good position. Hotspurs reacted strongly and Abela hit the post in a confused attack on the Youngsters goal. The result was sealed by a wonderful goal in the 87th minute. Anthony Portelli took the ball half way in the Hotspurs side and with a perfect lob he found the top corner of the posts.  A very good goal indeed. This was supposed to be the last match programmed for the Sannat Ground as from next weekend the matches will resume at the Gozo Stadium.
